About

Biography

Originally from Ireland, I have lived in Paris for nearly 30 years. Trained initially as an architect, I changed to work firstly in the fashion industry and then later as a textile artist. In recent times my art practice has explored weaving, using a small floor loom, having been inspired by the work of Anni Albers. The weavings are precisely woven, geometric colour compositions. Alluding to my past architectural studies, they combine the visual language of architecture with my love of textile construction, colour and natural fibres. Simple linear perspectives create a sense of space, volume and distance; colour-mixing warp and weft threads to depict light and shadow, sometimes with a touch of lurex to add a reflet of lustre.

My work explores themes of solitude, transition and identity. Being solitary is neither sad nor lonely in my mind, but an opportunity for reflection and renewal. Adjustment, courage, sometimes a bit of soul-searching is required to re-emerge with clarity and awareness, which in turn brings a sense of peace and resolution.
Living away from my native Ireland has greatly shaped who I am. At times feeling peripheral, an onlooker observing from afar, I have grown to understand a different sense of belonging to where I am and to where I came from. Looking at aspects of my earlier life, embracing the recurrent themes I have a renewed sense of connection to my artwork.
